PS3
PS3
Right from the start, the PS3 has billed itself as more than just another games console. And this machine lives up to its promise. It's one of the most capable Blu-Ray DVD Player available today. The PS3 has built in ethernet and is one of the few Blu-ray players that support BD-Live. It will also support Blu-ray BonusView, for playing back picture-in-picture content.
The PS3's film playback experience is best if you start from scratch, insert a disc into the front loading slot of the Blu-Ray DVD Player as soon as you turn on the unit. It takes and incredibly short amount of time for a disc to load and start playing.
The PS3 doesn't come with a proper Blu-Ray DVD Player remote control for video playback though so you have use the game controller to navigate through films which requires two hands. (ony does sell an extra cost dedicated remote control though. And you will want to buy the remote as using two hands and missing common buttons is not good!
The pop up information display is well designed and unobtrusive as well as easily readable. The pop-up is the only way to see where you are in the disc, since the PS3 lacks an LCD screen such as those normally seen on DVD and dedicated Blu-Ray DVD Player.
The video quality isn't quite up to a dedicated blu-ray player as it can lack contrast, detail, and some dimensional depth.
Nevertheless, the PS3 is a cracking Blu-Ray DVD Player if you want to play HD Blu-ray movies and don't absolutly have to have a dedicated player. Even including the cost of a remote control, you will get a reasonably priced Blu-Ray DVD Player that can handle all of the latest BonusView and BD-Live content. Plus, you can use the machine to play games, browse pictures, and surf the internet as well.
