The Panasonic DMP-BD55 Blu-Ray DVD Player was launched in September 2008 and is the replacement for the popular DMP-BD50.
The chassis is much slimmer, almost a 1cm lower than the old Blu-Ray DVD Player and over 8cm less on the depth. The DMP-BD55 comes with Profile 2.0 which makes it BD-Live compatible. So you will have no problems accessing the interactive features on the new DVDs which the older Profile 1.0 and 1.1 players will be missing out on. Due to the new 2.0 profile the Blu-Ray DVD Player has an Ethernet port to connect to the internet. This is used to download the interactive content and also means the software and firmware can be upgraded in the future.
One thing missing now is the 5.1 analogue audio outputs. This means that HD audio formats are only supported via HDMI. This shouldn't be a big issue for most people as they will be using new AV equipment with HDMI inputs. It might, however, be a problem for people who have been using analogue connections to process their HD audio. However, it's not all bad news as the DMP-BD55 now internally decodes the new HD codecs, so HDMI connections will give you the full performance of the HD audio codecs, whether or not your AV can decode these.
The Panasonic DMP-BD55 outputs 1080p at 24fps which means so long as you have a TV with this feature then your new Blu-Ray DVD Player will be showing you the smoothest and highest quality picture available today from a DVD.
This Panasonic DMP-BD55 Blu-Ray Player is a worthy replacement to the DMP-BD50 and is definitely one of the new generation of Blu-Ray DVD Player which make investing in a new stand-alone Blu-Ray DVD Player worthwhile.
