Panasonic were the first company with a dedicated Profile 2.0 player, the DMP-BD50. It's job is to challenge the PS3 as the best Blu-Ray DVD Player on the market.
Complying with BD Profile 2.0 is not the only thing the BD50 has in common with the PS3. It also decodes Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio to PCM for output to either an AVR or a pre-pro. The PS3 can only perform this task over HDMI, whereas this Panasonic Blu-Ray DVD Player offers the option of 5.1 analog outputs as well , so an HDMI-equipped receiver is not necessary to be able to enjoy true HD loss-less audio quality.
The DMP-BD50 has speaker set-up controls for all the analog outputs, including parameters that let you decide on large or small speaker sizes.
For the new AVRs and pre-pros with onboard decoding of TrueHD and DTS-HD MA, the Blu-Ray DVD Player can send the raw bit streams over via the HDMI link. Should you chose this option, you will lose the secondary audio with PIP as well as the clicks and beeps found in the menus of Blu-ray discs.
In order to fully comply with Profile 2.0, a Blu-Ray DVD Player must have 1GB of storage. This is accomplished via an SD card slot hidden behind the flip down front panel of the Blu-Ray DVD Player. This not only supplies the required storage but also allows the display of digitial photos from a camera as well as AVCHD video from an HD camcorder.
An Ethernet port allows you to connect the Blu-Ray DVD Player to the internet, not only for the BD-Live on-line features, but for any firmware updates too.
Lastly, Panasonic's Viera Link is included whic conveys control codes to all compatible equipment connected by HDMI. This allows one remote to control everything.
