The Samsung BD-P1400 is now one of the older Blu-Ray DVD Player currently for sale. To be fair its features do now reflect this. It lacks both BonusView for picture-in-picture playback and BD-Live for accessing Internet-connected content.

In terms of image and sound quality the Blu-Ray DVD Player does nudge ahead of the Panasonic DMP-BD30. The detail is impressive but sometimes images can simply be a little too bright. The BD-P1400 does do well playing standard definition DVDs. The BD-P1400 is one of a few Blu-Ray DVD Player for sale that support on-board Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD High Resolution decoding.

The Blu-Ray DVD Player powers up and starts quicker than most players but it isn't quite so fast once it has started playing. You sometimes need to be a little patient when using the remote.

The Blu-Ray DVD Player itself is easy to use though, its on-screen menus are clear and well illustrated and the icons are attractive and informative. The BD-P1400 Speaker Setup screen helps you to get your surround system properly configured. A clearly written and colourful "Quick Setup Guide" goes with the manual. The remote isn't actually backlit but the commonly used buttons do glow slightly when it's dark.

The BD-P1400 comes with an ethernet port, which makes updating the firmware of the Blu-Ray DVD Player very easy indeed so long as you can stretch a cable from your router to your TV.
