BD-HP20
BD-HP20
The BD-HP20 is Sharp's first Blu-Ray DVD Player and is a real winner on all fronts.
Turn on the Blu-Ray DVD Player and the unit is powered up and ready to receive a disc in less than six seconds. That is way quicker than any other player. It's not the fastest at starting to play though, but the combined start-up time is still faster than any other player.
What you see and hear from your Blu-Ray DVD Player is what really counts though. And the BD-HP20 simply surpasses every other player on almost any criteria including detail, colour quality, brightness and contrast, as well as audio.
Apart from a great picture, great sound, and a quick response time, the Blu-Ray DVD Player isn't full of fancy features. It doesn't have an ethernet port, Divx support (common on competing Blu-ray Disc players), or picture-in-picture BonusView support. Even the USB port is a bit limited - it is only for firmware updates.
This Blu-Ray DVD Player does have an on-board capability to decode Dolby TrueHD and Dolby Digital Plus audio which is a real bonus for titles that come with those sound-track formats.
There is a downside to the Blu-Ray DVD Player design though - if you lose the remote control then you're in trouble. The only buttons on the front panel are Power and Open/Close!
The Blu-Ray DVD Player case design isn't the only flaw in the BD-HP20 though, the on-screen menus are not very consistent. Sometimes they are easy to read with large type and icons, but at other times they're very heavy with poor quality text. They do however explain all the options.
Where it really counts though, this is one great Blu-ray player.
