The DMP-BD50 is BD ROM Profile 2.0 enabled, and it's equipped with an Ethernet connection so you can access all the interactive features of BD-Live online.

Sony BDP-S350 Blu-Ray DVD Player

The BDP-S350 is not on sale until early Septmber and the first thing you notice are the dimensions, or rather the lack of them. Compared to the old BDP-S300 model, the BDP-S350 is 45 per cent smaller overall and only 22cm deep. The chassis has been strengthened and embossed and a new type of fan has been included to reduce the noise.

Whilst this model does not have all the features, if you are looking for an entry-level blu-ray dvd player then you will struggle to find better than the BDP-S350.

Sony BDP-S550 Blu-Ray DVD Player

The BDP-S550 is not on sale yet in the UK and it has only just been announced by Sony as their new top of the range player. Compared to the old BDP-S500 model, the BDP-S550 looks amazing and it is one hundred percent packed with all the latest specs and features including the blu-ray profile 2.0.

There is an Ethernet port for easy firmware upgrading along with DB-Live for access to internet based interactive features and BonusView (picture in picture support) support for some new blu-ray movies. 1GB of storage is featured on this blu-ray dvd player along with an external port for extra local storage via optional flash based memory.

The BDP-S300 does very with user interfaces, remote handsets and the overall slickness. Therefore there is lots to like. The BDP-S300 looks the part, the remote control feels and looks fantastic, and in the on-shelf pride factor, it’s defintiely a winner.

The quality of the picture on this blu-ray dvd player is impressively high and the smoothness of motion is good. It supports 24fps natively.

Sony BDP-S500 Blu-Ray DVD Player

The BDP-S500 is at the top of Sony’s Blu-ray range, and has a price to match its geek impressing technical specifications as well as the good looks. The BDP-S500 is a great looking player too and the motorised blue front panel which drops down to reveal the disc draw is a neat touch.

In action this blu-ray dvd player mostly lives up to expectations, with a solid performance to go with its build quality. The colour palette is vivid and natural, while slow, panning shots in ‘proper’ films look great thanks to its 24-frames-per-second motion capability.

The PS3 from Sony is an eye catcher for a few reasons. Most obvious is that it’s a games console and a staggeringly well equipped one at that. This leads on to the fact that the PS3 is actually a well-equipped blu-ray player too.

You can watch discs at the optimum frame rate of 24fps, as well as at the full 1080p resolution. Also, normal DVDs can be upscaled to 1080p resolution. It has HDMI 1.3a support too which means it can send the latest audio codecs via the HDMI port, including 7.1-channel Dolby TrueHD. The BD-P1400 is a relatively inexpensive player, but it does have the all the performance you would expect at its budget price.
