Panasonic DMP-BD30 Blu-Ray DVD Player

This player really comes up trumps on the technology front. The DMP-BD30 is the first stand-alone blu-ray dvd player we've seen to conform to the BD 1.1 standard. This provides access to all of the new interactive content that the studios are going to be packing their blu-ray discs with including things like on-screen picture-in-picture commentary.

The DMP-BD30 can also stream all known incarnations of high-definition audio, which makes it better than most of the current high-defition disc players.

The DMP-BD50 is BD ROM Profile 2.0 enabled, and it's equipped with an Ethernet connection so you can access all the interactive features of BD-Live online.

The integrated SD memory card slot in the DMP-BD50 will allow you to download additional content for relevant Blu-ray titles, including sub-titles and BD-Java applications. There is an ethernet connection which lets you download any updates for the blu-ray dvd player as and when released.

Blu-Ray DVD Player by Sony

Sony’s latest Blu-Ray players include the brand new BDP-S350 and BDP-S550. Both of these stream all HD Audio codecs and have fanastic picture and sound quality. There are also the current models, the BDP-S300 and BDP-S500. And not forgetting the PS3.

Sony BDP-S350 Blu-Ray DVD Player

Sony BDP-S350 Blu-Ray DVD Player

The BDP-S350 is not on sale until early Septmber and the first thing you notice are the dimensions, or rather the lack of them. Compared to the old BDP-S300 model, the BDP-S350 is 45 per cent smaller overall and only 22cm deep. The chassis has been strengthened and embossed and a new type of fan has been included to reduce the noise.

Whilst this model does not have all the features, if you are looking for an entry-level blu-ray dvd player then you will struggle to find better than the BDP-S350.

Sony BDP-S550 Blu-Ray DVD Player

The BDP-S550 is not on sale yet in the UK and it has only just been announced by Sony as their new top of the range player. Compared to the old BDP-S500 model, the BDP-S550 looks amazing and it is one hundred percent packed with all the latest specs and features including the blu-ray profile 2.0.

There is an Ethernet port for easy firmware upgrading along with DB-Live for access to internet based interactive features and BonusView (picture in picture support) support for some new blu-ray movies. 1GB of storage is featured on this blu-ray dvd player along with an external port for extra local storage via optional flash based memory.

Sony BDP-S300 Blu-Ray DVD Player

Sony BDP-S300 Blu-Ray DVD Player

The BDP-S300 does very with user interfaces, remote handsets and the overall slickness. Therefore there is lots to like. The BDP-S300 looks the part, the remote control feels and looks fantastic, and in the on-shelf pride factor, it’s defintiely a winner.

The quality of the picture on this blu-ray dvd player is impressively high and the smoothness of motion is good. It supports 24fps natively.

Sony BDP-S500 Blu-Ray DVD Player

Sony BDP-S500 Blu-Ray DVD Player

The BDP-S500 is at the top of Sony’s Blu-ray range, and has a price to match its geek impressing technical specifications as well as the good looks. The BDP-S500 is a great looking player too and the motorised blue front panel which drops down to reveal the disc draw is a neat touch.

In action this blu-ray dvd player mostly lives up to expectations, with a solid performance to go with its build quality. The colour palette is vivid and natural, while slow, panning shots in ‘proper’ films look great thanks to its 24-frames-per-second motion capability.

Sony PS3 Blu-Ray DVD Player

Sony PS3 Blu-Ray DVD Player

The PS3 from Sony is an eye catcher for a few reasons. Most obvious is that it’s a games console and a staggeringly well equipped one at that. This leads on to the fact that the PS3 is actually a well-equipped blu-ray player too.

You can watch discs at the optimum frame rate of 24fps, as well as at the full 1080p resolution. Also, normal DVDs can be upscaled to 1080p resolution. It has HDMI 1.3a support too which means it can send the latest audio codecs via the HDMI port, including 7.1-channel Dolby TrueHD. This really does compare with the best blu-ray dvd player as far as audio spec goes.

Blu-Ray DVD Player by Samsung

Samsung’s latest Blu-Ray players include the new BD-P1500 and the BD-P1400. Both of these blu ray dvd players are good solid all-rounders.

Samsung BD-P1400 Blu-Ray DVD Player

Samsung BD-P1400 Blu-Ray DVD Player

The BD-P1400 is a relatively inexpensive player, but it does have the all the performance you would expect at its budget price.

The Samsung BD-P1400 is now one of the older blu-ray dvd player currently available. And its features do reflect this as it lacks both bonus view for picture in picture playback and the BD-Live for accessing content from the internet.

Samsung BD-P1500 Blu-Ray DVD Player

Samsung BD-P1500 Blu-Ray DVD Player

The BD-P1500 is a solid performer and like its predecessors braves the way with new features. As a source device, the BD-P1500 does exactly what should do, i.e. play blu-ray discs as well as standard DVDs and CDs. It upscales DVDs to 720p, 1080i, or 1080p resolutions. And if your display supports it, this blu-ray dvd player can output 1080p/24 via HDMI for superior picture quality, particularly fast-motion movie sequences.

Blu-Ray DVD Player by Sharp

At present the only Sharp Blu-Ray player widely available in the UK is the BD-HP20. It is, however, a good machine so don't be put off by the lack of choice.

Sharp BD-HP20 Blu-Ray DVD Player

Sharp BD-HP20 Blu-Ray DVD Player

The BD-HP20 does a fantastic job with Full HD images. Whites are clean and bright and the blacks are glossy and deep. There isn't perfect stability to the rapid panning shots; they have a slight vagueness to the most violent movement, but it is pretty good none the less.

And the BD-HP20 good news continues on the high definition audio front. This blu-ray dvd player can decode Dolby True HD onboard, so any multi channel receiver with a 5.1 input can deliver the most exhilarating of sounds.
